A safety plan helps you cope during difficult moments. Write this down and keep it accessible:
1. Warning Signs
What thoughts, feelings, or situations tell me I'm struggling? (e.g., "I feel hopeless," "I'm isolating myself")
2. Internal Coping Strategies
What can I do on my own to feel safer? (e.g., breathing exercises, grounding, distraction, journaling)
3. People & Social Settings
Who can I be around to feel better? Where can I go to feel safe? (e.g., friend's house, public space, family)
4. People to Ask for Help
Who can I contact when I'm struggling? List 3-5 names and phone numbers.
5. Professional Resources
Crisis lines, therapists, doctors. (Save this page. Bookmark 988 or your local helpline.)
6. Making My Environment Safe
How can I reduce access to things I could use to harm myself? (e.g., ask someone to hold medications, remove sharp objects)
Know these signs in yourself and others. Early intervention saves lives.
๐ How to Help Someone in Crisis
๐
Listen without judgment. Let them talk. Don't minimize their feelings ("It's not that bad"). Just be present.
โ
Ask directly about suicide. "Are you thinking about killing yourself?" This does NOT plant the idea. It shows you care.
๐ฅ
Encourage professional help. Offer to help them call a helpline or find a therapist. Offer to go with them.
๐
Help make their environment safe. Ask about access to medications, weapons, or other means. Offer to hold onto them temporarily.
๐
Don't keep it secret. If they're in immediate danger, call emergency services. It's better they're alive and angry than not here.
๐
Check in regularly. A simple text ("Thinking of you") can make a huge difference. Follow up after crisis passes.
